Pre-procedure Testing with No Symptoms

COVID-19 testing is required for any surgery that may require an overnight hospital stay. Talk with your provider to see if COVID-19 testing is needed prior to your procedure or surgery. Please note that emergency/urgent procedures will never be delayed to await COVID-19 testing results.

  • Clearance testing for work, school or travel

  • Testing for family and holiday gatherings when you do not have symptoms

HNL Lab Medicine is not offering COVID-19 clearance testing at our Patient Centers due to resource constraints.  The availability of this type testing may change in conjunction with availability of resources and CDC recommendations.  Clearance testing includes the testing of people who are asymptomatic (do not have symptoms), do not have a significant exposure to the virus and require clearance through COVID-19 testing for work, school or travel.
 
Where to get clearance testing
COVID-19 clearance testing is available at local pharmacies such as CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens.  Patients are advised to call their local pharmacy for additional information. Patients may receive a bill based on their insurance coverage.

Please be advised HNL Lab Medicine may not release COVID-19 testing status or results over the phone.  For test results, please visit www.myhnlaccess.com or contact your healthcare provider.

During these extraordinary times where COVID-19 testing exceeds the nations supplies and our capacity, we have collaborated with additional reference laboratories to provide additional capacity to ensure the fastest turnaround possible for test results.

| Healthcare Professionals

COVID-19 testing specimens must be ordered by a healthcare professional. The preferred sample type is nasopharyngeal (NP) swab in UTM viral transport media.

Please do not send the patient for COVID-19 specimen collection OR to drop off COVID-19 specimens to any HNL Lab Medicine Patient Center.

Specimens must be collected by a healthcare professional or a designated COVID-19 regional testing site, which can be sent to HNL Lab Medicine for processing.
 
  • Prior to collection, instruct the patient to blow their nose to remove excess mucous.
  • Gently pass the swab through the nose into the posterior nasopharynx.
  • Rub the swab on the nasopharyngeal membrane several times to loosen and collect cellular material.
  • Withdraw the swab and place in UTM tube.
  • Snap off swab at the score mark and screw on cap of UTM tube.
  • Specimen must be refrigerated or frozen.


IMPORTANT: Samples must be picked up by an HNL Lab Medicine courier or processed by one of the designated COVID-19 regional testing and assessment sites. If you require a courier pickup, please contact our Customer Care Department at 877-402-4221. 

 

Healthcare professionals should contact their public health authority for information on managing individuals potentially infected with the virus.
