HNL Lab Medicine is honored to employ two recipients of the Lehigh Valley Business Healthcare Heroes awards. Nominated by their peers, these two individuals exhibit a commitment to excellence, compassion for their teams, and a depth of knowledge that they continue to share to elevate the culture of excellence at HNL Lab Medicine.

COVID-19 Hero – Elizabeth Page

Elizabeth (Beth) Page has won the COVID-19 Hero award for her tremendous composure, organization, and compassion throughout the pandemic. As the supervisor of specimen entry, every COVID specimen that came through HNL Lab Medicine’s doors went through her department. Beth worked countless hours through COVID surges to process specimens quickly, to improve the turnaround time for patients waiting for results.

Even under that stress, Beth remained compassionate and dedicated to her team, says teammate, Laboratory Assistant, Haley Murphy in her nomination; “She is the most considerate, caring, and forbearing person towards clients and her employees. She goes above and beyond for her department and everyone at HNL Lab Medicine while working extended hours to help her team.”

And Laboratory Assistant, Breanne Reed adds: “Beth is an incredible boss who works extra hours to try to help us out, she does her best to divide everything up, and yet she is still one of the nicest, most understanding individuals I've ever worked with. She's been under a lot of stress because of COVID, but she still pushed through it all with us. Everyone in the department respects her, including me, and I would like her to get some recognition for all or her hard work and effort that she puts forth every day. We see it in the department and we wouldn't want anyone else put in charge.”

In addition to her obvious compassion and ability to perform under pressure, Beth’s aptitude for leading effectively during unprecedented circumstances is well noted by her Manager, Director of Clinical Operations, Charlene Miller: “I am nominating Beth for working countless hours in Specimen Management and for her ability to guide her team through all the COVID surges that we had as a lab. Every single COVID specimen that came to our lab went through her department. She worked countless hours every day of the week and was also here on Saturdays and Sundays helping her team receive, order, and label COVID specimens and helped to implement new processes in the department that allowed us to expedite and prioritize COVID specimens to get physicians and patients their results."

Beth, you are an absolute asset to HNL Lab Medicine, as a leader, as a teammate and as a human. Thank you for your dedication and compassion, to your team in specimen management and to the entire HNL organization.

Lifetime Achievement Hero – Cathy Leffler

Our second Healthcare Hero award winner was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Hero award. Sarah (Cathy) Leffler has been a part of the HNL Lab Medicine team for the last 16 plus years. As a Senior Histotechnologist, she often collaborates with her team and shares her expertise to drive continuous improvement throughout our histology department. “Cathy has always been the go-to in Histology. She is so knowledgeable and helpful to everyone she talks to. She works very hard to keep this department running. Cathy is always up to date on logs, handles phone calls from pathologists, and any issues that come to our department. She handles everything with the utmost professionalism. Cathy is a true joy to work with and deserves the recognition.” Says teammate, Microtomy Technician, Hollyann White

In addition to her depth of knowledge, the histology team notes her general personality and work ethic as exceptional as well. Abby Smith, Lab Technologist-Toxicology, noted that “Cathy is such an asset to the Histology dept.  She is patient, helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. She works very hard to make sure all tasks are complete and has been working extra hard in preparation for CAP.”

Her manager, Pathology Operations Manager, Kelly Frankenfield notes that not only is Cathy adept at her position, she offers invaluable insight to the younger members of the histology team: “Cathy provides unparalleled technical quality to HNL's Histology department. Her numerous years acquiring expert knowledge makes her an invaluable member of our team. We are fortunate to have her training and mentoring our next generation of Histotechs.”

Cathy truly deserves the honor from the Lifetime Recognition Award. Thank you for the excellence you continuously display and for setting the bar high and consistently helping your team exceed expectations.

Thank You
These two individuals have touched countless lives while working at HNL Lab Medicine and we couldn’t be more thankful or proud to call them our teammates. Congratulations Beth and Cathy, and thank you for all that you do and all that you are!
