COVID-19 Antibody Testing

< Back to News

May 11, 2020
HNL Lab Medicine is pleased to announce the availability of an FDA-authorized antibody test which has a reported specificity of 99.3%. This test is for individuals who know or think they may have had COVID-19 and have not had any symptoms for the past 14 days.

Specimen collection for the COVID-19 antibody blood test is available at HNL Lab Medicine Patient Centers. Healthcare professionals can also collect patient blood specimens in their offices and send the samples to HNL Lab Medicine for testing.

Antibodies developed by the body in response to viral infection may provide potential immunity against future infection. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, COVID-19 antibody testing may indicate that the person has been exposed to the virus and developed antibodies against it, which may mean that person has at least some immunity to the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. Antibody testing uses blood serum specimens and is sometimes referred to as serology testing.

Please note: This test is different from the COVID-19 PCR Swab test, which indicates if there is an active infection and that the virus is present.1

HNL Lab Medicine now offers two additional options to help our patients access the care they need while managing the cost of lab services.

Self-Pay:2
  • The Self-Pay option for this test is $38.90 with a prescription from a healthcare professional.
  • Self-Pay pricing is available to all patients but especially beneficial for patients that are uninsured, underinsured or have high deductible plans.
Lab Tests Direct:3
  • The Lab Tests Direct option for this test is $97.00 and allows you to order the COVID-19 Antibody Blood Test without a prescription from a healthcare professional.
  • Our Lab Tests Direct service is another opportunity for patients to potentially reduce their out-of-pocket expenses.

Patients suspected of having or confirmed to have active COVID-19 infection or disease may not visit HNL Lab Medicine patient service centers, which are not equipped to collect the necessary respiratory specimens for molecular COVID-19 diagnostic testing. Patients who believe they may have COVID-19 are strongly encouraged to contact their healthcare professional.
COVID-19 antibody testing limitations:4
  • A false-negative result may occur in patients whose blood is drawn before a patient has produced enough IgG antibodies for the test to detect.
  • Positive results may be due to past or present infection with non-SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus strains, such as coronavirus HKU1, NL63, OC43, or 229E.
  • Specimens from patients receiving therapeutic doses of Biotin (Vitamin H, B7, or B8) may interfere in immunoassays based on biotinylated reagents.
  • Detection of IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 at present is not yet established to determine long term immunity to the virus or to protect the patient against re-infection by the virus.
  • The results obtained with this test should only be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings, and the results from other laboratory tests and evaluations.
    • This is especially important if the patient has had recent exposure to COVID-19, or clinical presentation indicates that COVID-19 is likely and diagnostic tests for other causes of illness (e.g., other respiratory illnesses) are negative.
    • In this case, direct testing for the SARS-CoV-2 virus (e.g. PCR testing) should be considered.
  • This test should not be used for screening of donated blood.
1The COVID-19 PCR Swab test is NOT available for collection at HNL Lab Medicine's Patient Centers. The COVID-19 PCR Swab test is for those individuals who have symptoms or meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's testing criteria.

2To qualify for Self-Pay Pricing, have your blood drawn at any HNL Lab Medicine Patient Centers listed at www.HNL.com/locations and inform the phlebotomist prior to getting your blood drawn that you would like to Self-Pay.

3 Lab Tests Direct is a convenient, affordable, and confidential way to order a lab test. Choose from more than 100 tests and view easy to understand results online. These results can be shared with your healthcare provider(s). Tests can be ordered through LabTestsDirect.com.
