New COVID-19 Lab Data Reporting Requirements from HHS

This communication is an alert that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  have provided updated guidance on what  must  versus what should  be collected and reported with COVID-19 testing. This updated guidance includes the new Ask at Order Entry (AOE) questions.

We rely on you to provide the following information that MUST be collected and reported to state or local health departments:

  1. Patient age
  2. Patient race
  3. Patient ethnicity
  4. Patient sex
  5. Patient residence zip code
  6. Patient residence county
  7. Ordering provider name and NPI (as applicable)
  8. Ordering provider zip
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued guidance that performing laboratories report the above information, along with 10 additional pieces of information including complete and comprehensive lab testing data such as standardized test results, relevant demographic details, and additional information that may help inform and improve the public health response to COVID-19.
  • Review the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) new guidelines.
The updated guidance also indicates additional items that SHOULD be collected for state or local health departments and includes Ask On Order Entry questions (AOE questions).
