Am I responsible for COVID-19 testing charges if I am uninsured?

As of March 22, 2022, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) will no longer be covering Covid-19 testing for patients without insurance. Patients or providers may be billed for these services effective on this date.

Who can I contact with questions about my benefits or insurance coverage?
Call the telephone number on the back of your insurance card for Member Services. This number is specific to your plan and benefits, and it helps you receive the right answers faster.

Resources that are available to providers and/or uninsured individuals:
Alternative resources for uninsured individuals who need COVID-19 services or other health care coverage include:

Note: per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Requirements for COVID-19 Vaccination Program Providers, providers must continue to administer COVID-19 vaccines at no out-of-pocket cost to recipients

Is COVID-19 testing covered by my plan and what will it cost me?

COVID-19 testing will be covered with no additional costs when recommended by a medical professional. While this coverage applies to many insurance policies, every plan is a little different. If you have questions on coverage, costs, or anything else, call Member Service at the number on the back of your card. *Exclusions may apply.

In order for a COVID-19 test to be eligible for coverage under your health plan, there’s some important criteria that must be met. In fact, ALL of the following must be confirmed before a test can be approved.

First and foremost, all tests must be ordered by a licensed health care professional unless the test is being ordered prior to an elective surgery. If deemed clinically appropriate, your physician must come to the conclusion that you’re showing signs and symptoms typically associated with COVID-19 — fever, cough, shortness of breath. In the event that you’re asymptomatic, a health care provider must determine that you’ve had known or suspected recent exposure to someone with the virus before a test can be performed.

If the order for a test meets the coverage criteria above, the sample must be collected by authorized health care personnel.

My Employer ordered testing, will it be covered?
In the event that an employer requires a test that is not medically necessary — for instance, as part of a return-to-work protocol or travel — costs may not be covered by your insurance policy. Please contact your employer or your insurance carrier Member Services number on the back of your card.

Why did I receive a bill for Covid testing and I have insurance?
Please verify that your current insurance is reflected on the statement; refer to your Explanation of Benefits or contact your insurance for more information related to your coverage.
