Supporting Our Neighbors: HNL Lab Medicine’s Commitment to Fighting Food Insecurity

HNL Lab Medicine Gives Back to Help Address Food Insecurity

At HNL Lab Medicine, caring for the community goes beyond the lab. It means showing up for our neighbors, especially during times when everyday necessities like food are becoming harder to afford.

That commitment recently came to life through a company-wide food drive supporting Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley & Northeast Pennsylvania, an organization dedicated to helping individuals and families facing food insecurity across the region.

Why Food Insecurity Remains a Critical Issue

While inflation has slowed in some areas, food prices continue to rise faster than overall inflation. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, food prices increased more than 3 percent year over year in 2025, with grocery costs continuing to strain household budgets, particularly for families balancing healthcare, housing, and other essential expenses (USDA ERS, 2025).

These ongoing pressures highlight why food banks remain a vital resource and why community support matters now more than ever.

Coming Together to Support Second Harvest

Second Harvest Food Bank serves as the region’s primary food distribution hub, partnering with more than 200 local agencies across six counties in the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania. Through these partnerships, food reaches families, children, seniors, and individuals who need it most.

During this year’s food drive, HNL Lab Medicine employees came together to donate essential food items in support of Second Harvest’s mission. The collective effort reflects a shared belief that even small acts, when multiplied across a community, can make a meaningful difference.

“Food insecurity affects more people in our community than many realize,” said Beth Page, Manager, Specimen Management at HNL Lab Medicine. “Supporting organizations like Second Harvest aligns with who we are as an organization. We are proud of our team for stepping up and helping ensure our neighbors have access to the resources they need.”

Strengthening the Communities We Serve

Second Harvest operates as part of Community Action Lehigh Valley, an anti-poverty nonprofit that has served the region for decades. By distributing food through trusted local partners, the organization helps address immediate needs while also supporting long-term community stability.

For HNL Lab Medicine, supporting efforts like this is a natural extension of its mission. As a healthcare organization deeply rooted in the region, HNL Lab Medicine understands that health is influenced by more than medical care alone. Access to nutritious food plays an important role in overall well-being.

A Shared Responsibility

Giving back is not limited to a single event. It is about fostering a culture of care, compassion, and community involvement. As economic pressures continue to impact households, partnerships between local organizations, nonprofits, and community members remain essential.

HNL Lab Medicine is honored to support Second Harvest Food Bank and remains committed to initiatives that help strengthen the health and resilience of the communities it serves.
