HNL Lab Medicine Supports South Mountain Middle School Through United Way Community Schools Program
HNL Lab Medicine is proud to support South Mountain Middle School as part of the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley’s Community Schools program, which serves nearly 20,000 children across 33 schools in five districts. The initiative aims to break down barriers to education, allowing students to thrive academically and emotionally. This partnership reflects HNL Lab Medicine’s commitment to empowering the next generation and improving the well-being of the communities we serve.
The United Way Community Schools program is designed to provide comprehensive support to students in the region’s highest-need schools. By removing barriers such as lack of access to food, healthcare, and school supplies, the program enables students and their families to access critical resources. In addition, the initiative provides mental and behavioral health services, academic enrichment programs, a backpack drive and food pantry, and parent engagement workshops, helping children and families thrive both in and outside the classroom.
At the heart of each Community School is a full-time Community School Coordinator, whose role is to ensure the coordination of these services. They focus on building trusting relationships with students and families, fostering family engagement, and facilitating connections to essential resources like healthcare and housing.
“We believe in giving back to the communities we serve. Partnering with United Way to support South Mountain has been a powerful way to invest in the next generation,” said Angela Connell, Vice President of Human Resources at HNL Lab Medicine. “Education is the foundation for a brighter future, and that starts with empowering our youth through initiatives like this.”
“This partnership exemplifies the power of collaborative alliances that directly support our Strategic Plan’s commitment to whole child development and community engagement.” said Dr. Carol D. Birks, Superintendent & Chief Executive Officer of the Allentown School District.
“By aligning with partners like HNL Lab Medicine and the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, we are removing barriers that hinder student success and strengthening the foundation for academic achievement, health, and wellness. These kinds of bonds spotlight how community organizations can truly work with the District to light the way forward for children in Allentown.”
Since the partnership began, South Mountain Middle School has experienced impressive outcomes. Attendance has increased by 29% and engagement in learning has improved. Math scores have seen a remarkable improvement, with an 85% increase in students scoring at proficient or higher. Additionally, 92% of students in need have received connections to mental health support and other critical resources, demonstrating the success of the program’s holistic approach to student achievement. The initiative has also contributed to greater family stability and higher engagement in school events.
“This initiative demonstrates how we at HNL Lab Medicine are not just healthcare providers but active partners in community growth,” said Jessica Bargilione, Vice President of Marketing at HNL Lab Medicine. “The dedication of South Mountain’s staff and students inspires us to contribute in ways that help unlock their full potential. Every child deserves the chance to thrive, and our contribution is a step toward making that vision a reality.”
HNL Lab Medicine’s partnership with South Mountain Middle School is set to continue for a minimum of three years, further solidifying the ongoing commitment to supporting student success and community development. Our investment in this initiative underscores its dedication to making a lasting, positive impact on the region’s youth and their families.
As HNL Lab Medicine continues supporting South Mountain, we join the broader efforts of the United Way’s Community Schools program and ensure that students have the resources they need to excel in both academics and life.
