In the Lab with Zarate and Pickering: Bacterial ID Advancements

Join HNL Lab Medicine in celebrating the expertise and outstanding scientific contributions of two dedicated employees, Ely Zarate, Manager of Microbiology, and Elizabeth Pickering, Senior Technologist of Microbiology, in their groundbreaking study and subsequent article titled “A multicenter evaluation of Copan’s Colibrí™, an automated instrument for MALDI TOF MS target application for bacterial identification.” Their work has illuminated a path to revolutionizing bacterial identification techniques, bringing innovation and precision to the forefront of medical diagnostics.

In their study, Zarate and Pickering evaluated the Colibrí, a cutting-edge instrument designed to automate the picking and placement of bacterial colonies on target plates for MALDI (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization) identification. To assess the Colibri’s performance, they conducted a rigorous comparison with the traditional manual spotting method using the VITEK® MS system. The research encompassed a diverse range of cultures, including urine, wound, respiratory, and positive blood cultures.

The Colibrí not only demonstrated an impressive level of efficiency but also maintained an overall agreement rate of 99.54% when compared to manual spotting. Out of the 444 bacteria analyzed, 432 were successfully identified using both methods, with only 2 discrepant results. While 12 organisms (2.70%) remained unidentified using the Colibrí, the instrument’s automation potential and high accuracy promise a transformative shift in clinical microbiology.

The implications of Zarate and Pickering’s work are far-reaching. By introducing automation to a previously manual process, the Colibrí instrument not only enhances accuracy but also enables technologists to focus on more intricate tasks. Furthermore, the complete traceability from plating to organism identification provided by the Colibrí ensures a seamless and efficient workflow in clinical laboratories.

Ely Zarate and Elizabeth Pickering exemplify the very essence of exemplary HNL Lab Medicine employees. Their unwavering dedication to advancing the frontiers of laboratory science is a testament to the culture of innovation and excellence that thrives within our organization.
