HNL Lab Medicine Inspires the Next Generation of Laboratory Professionals

What does a career in laboratory medicine really look like?

For 10 local high school juniors, seniors, and incoming college students, that question was answered firsthand during HNL Lab Medicine's annual Student Immersion Program. Over four days, students stepped inside the laboratory to explore the science behind patient care, connect with experienced laboratory professionals, and discover the many career opportunities available in laboratory medicine.

Held July 13 to 16, the immersive program provided participants with a behind-the-scenes look at one of healthcare's most essential professions. Students toured multiple laboratory departments, participated in hands-on learning activities, observed advanced diagnostic testing, and learned how laboratory professionals help physicians diagnose disease, guide treatment decisions, and improve patient outcomes every day.

Learning Through Experience

Designed to inspire future healthcare professionals, the Student Immersion Program gives students an opportunity to experience laboratory medicine beyond the classroom. Throughout the week, participants explored the technology, teamwork, and scientific expertise that drive modern diagnostic testing while engaging directly with HNL Lab Medicine team members.

To create a meaningful and interactive experience, the program is intentionally limited to 10 students each year. Participants are selected through a competitive application process that opens early each year, allowing students who are interested in science and healthcare to gain personalized exposure to a variety of laboratory careers.

"Our Student Immersion Program is one of the most rewarding initiatives we offer because it gives students the opportunity to see firsthand how laboratory professionals make a difference in healthcare every day," said Katie Moore, MLS (ASCP)cm, Training and Development Coordinator. "Many students are unfamiliar with the wide range of careers available in laboratory medicine until they experience it for themselves. We hope this program inspires participants to pursue careers in laboratory medicine and become part of the next generation of healthcare professionals."

The Important Role of Laboratory Medicine

While physicians and nurses are often the most visible members of the healthcare team, laboratory professionals play a critical role behind the scenes.

From detecting infections and monitoring chronic diseases to supporting emergency care and cancer treatment, laboratory testing provides physicians with the information they need to make informed decisions about patient care.

Programs like Student Immersion help introduce students to these rewarding careers while supporting the future healthcare workforce and increasing awareness of the important role laboratory medicine plays in improving lives. Participants also left with a deeper appreciation for the profession and the impact laboratory professionals have on patient care.
