Clinical Utility

-7 and7q- are seen in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). They may occur de novo or be secondary to an exposure to chemical mutagens, chemotherapy treatments with alkylating agents, or probably secondary to immunosuppressive therapy for severe aplastic anemia. Deletion (7q) is always interstitial with a cluster of breakpoints from 7q11 to 7q36. FISH for abnormalities of chromosome 7 can be performed on interphase or metaphase cells.
