Clinical Utility
Amikacin is effective in the treatment of serious gram-negative infections and is particularly useful in those strains resistant to other aminoglycosides. Monitoring serum/plasma concentrations of amikacin is useful because of the narrow margin between therapeutic effectiveness and toxicity.

Collection Instructions
Peak: Collect 30 minutes post infusion of IV dose.
Processing and Submission Instructions
- Centrifuge for 5 minutes at 3000 rpm and transfer serum or plasma to plastic aliquot tube.
- Freeze if delay in analysis will be more than 8 hours.
- Failure to freeze samples containing additional antibiotics may result in falsely low amikacin levels due to in vitro inactivation.
Transport Instructions
Transport serum or plasma aliquot to the laboratory frozen.
Stability Requirements
Frozen
Store serum or plasma aliquots frozen.
