Clinical Utility
Amikacin is effective in the treatment of serious gram-negative infections and is particularly useful in those strains resistant to other aminoglycosides. Monitoring serum/plasma concentrations of amikacin is useful because of the narrow margin between therapeutic effectiveness and toxicity.

Collection Instructions
Collect 30 minutes before the next dose.
Processing and Submission Instructions
  • Centrifuge for 5 minutes at 3000 rpm and transfer serum or plasma to plastic aliquot tube.
  • Freeze if delay in analysis will be more than 8 hours.
  • Failure to freeze samples containing additional antibiotics may result in falsely low amikacin levels due to in vitro inactivation.
Transport Instructions

Transport serum or plasma specimens to the laboratory frozen.
