If the Chromosome Analysis result is 'Failure, normal or no growth', Chromosome Microarray-SNP will be performed at an additional charge (CPT code 81229). |
| Clinical Utility | |||||
Description: Chromosome analysis of products of conception (POC) can detect fetal chromosome abnormalities, which are associated with approximately one-half of all first trimester spontaneous abortions. |
| Specimen and Container Info | |||||
Specimen: Nonfixed - Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) or Product of Conception (POC) Collection Container: Sterile container with transport medium (Kit is provided by the HNL Lab Medicine Cytogenetics Department) Desired Specimen Size: 5x5mm tissue Minimum Acceptable Specimen Size: 2x3mm tissue |
| Collection Instructions | |||||
Specimen should be aseptically collected and placed in a sterile collection container with transport medium. |
| Processing and Submission Instructions | |||||
Each specimen must be accompanied by an electronic order, or requisition form, or script, or physician note. |

| Methodology | |||||
| G-BANDING, Cytogenetic Analysis | |||||
| Reference Intervals | |||||
Reference Range: 20 cell analysis on a G banded preparation is performed for complete evaluation. If the cultures for chromosome analysis fail or the result of the test is normal, the test will be reflexed to microarray. |
| Limitations | |||||
Traditional G-banded chromosome analysis for POC yields low resolution structural and numerical analysis of the chromosomes, while CMA provides high-definition copy number analysis. This test cannot confidently differentiate between fetal and maternal tissue. |

| What triggers the reflex testing | |||||
| If the Product of Conception (POC) chromosome analysis is normal, the testing failed, or the culture had no growth, there will be a reflex to microarray testing. | |||||
