Euglobulin Clot Lysis Time

Expected Turnaround Time
4 - 10 days
Clinical Utility

Euglobulin clot lysis time (ECLT) provides an overall assessment of the fibrinolysis system by measuring the time for an in vitro clot to dissolve in the absence of the normal plasmin inhibitors. ECLT is useful in assessing the fibrinolytic system and monitoring patients on urokinase or streptokinase fibrinolytic therapy.

Specimen and Container Info

Specimen Type: Platelet-Poor Plasma

Collection Container: Light Blue Top (Sodium Citrate)

Desired Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Collection Instructions
  1. Collect 2 light blue top (sodium citrate) tubes via venipuncture.
  2. To avoid release of plasminogen activator, do not massage vein vigorously, pump fist excessively or leave tourniquet in place for a prolonged period.
Processing and Submission Instructions
  1. Separate plasma from cells within 30 minutes of collection.
  2. Centrifuge the light blue top tube for 10 minutes.
  3. Using a plastic transfer pipette carefully remove plasma from cells, being careful not to disturb the cells.
  4. Deliver plasma into plastic aliquot tube, cap and re-centrifuge for 10 minutes.
  5. Using a second plastic pipette remove the top portion of plasma, leaving approximately 250µL undisturbed in bottom of the tube.
  6. Transfer the plasma into a properly labeled plastic aliquot tube and freeze.
  7. Label specimen with a “platelet-poor plasma” sticker.
