Clinical Utility

Giardiasis caused by Giardia duodenalis (also known as G. lamblia and G. intestinalis) is the most common parasitic infection in the US and is common in children, travelers, and campers/hikers. Cryptosporidiosis caused by Cryptosporidium species is the leading cause of waterborne disease outbreaks in the US and occurs following exposure to contaminated recreational waters or other contaminated sources such as food. Proper diagnosis of these organisms facilitates appropriate treatment and management of these diseases. Testing is recommended in individuals with persistent diarrhea or with known risk factors.
