| Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is firmly bound to mast cells and only trace amounts are normally present in serum. When antigen (allergen) cross-links two IgE molecules, the mast cell is stimulated to release histamine and other vasoactive amines. These vasoactive amines are responsible for the vascular permeability and smooth muscle contraction occurring in such allergic reactions as hay fever, asthma, urticaria, and eczema. | |||
| Specimen and Container Info | |||
Specimen Type: Serum Preferred Collection Container: Gold Top, Serum Separator Minimum Acceptable Volume: 0.2 mL Volume reflects estimated whole blood. Note: This volume does not allow for repeat testing. |
| Processing and Submission Instructions | |||
Separator tubes: Contains clot activator and gel for separating serum from cells, but not anticoagulant. Separate serum from cells as soon as the clot has formed (30 minutes). If specimen is centrifuged before clotting is complete, a fibrin clot will form on top of the cell. This may cause the gel barrier to not be intact and could cause improper separation of serum and cells, possibly affecting test results. |
