Clinical Utility

Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry distinguishes among various hematopoietic cell populations and determines the degree of expression of a panel of cell surface antigens. The test is used along with morphologic, cytogenetic, and molecular genetic analysis in the identification/classification of hematopoietic neoplasms (leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplastic disorders, etc.).

Processing and Submission Instructions
  • Because non-viable cells lead to nonspecific monoclonal antibody binding, specimens should be processed as early as possible.
  • Because of the critical nature of Tissue/Fluid specimens, the laboratory will attempt to process all specimens received, regardless of specimen age with hematopathologist approval.
  • Specimens collected on a Friday should be received in the Flow Cytometry Department by 1600 to ensure same day processing.
Transport Instructions

Transport to the laboratory refrigerated.
