Test Name
MATERNAL CELL CONTAMINATION
CPT Codes
81265
Expected Turnaround Time
14 - 21 days
Clinical Utility

This test is used to rule out the presence of maternal cell contamination within a fetal specimen to aid in the accurate interpretation of prenatal molecular genetic or cytogenetic results.

Specimen and Container Info

Specimen Type: Whole Blood

Collection Container: Pale Yellow Top (ACD, Solution A)

Alternate Collection Container: Lavender Top (EDTA), Pink Top (EDTA), or Oragene Dx saliva kit

Desired Specimen Volume: 8.5 mL

Collection Instructions
  1. Collect a pale-yellow top (ACD Solution A) tube via venipuncture.

*For saliva samples, follow the instructions provided in the kit.

Processing and Submission Instructions

**Requires Integrated Genetics Test Requisition**

  1. Transport 8.5 mL of whole blood in the original collection container.
  2. Maternal samples sent for maternal cell contamination studies should be submitted under a separate requisition from fetal specimens (CVS or amniotic fluid).
Patient Preparation

For saliva samples do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum 30 minutes prior to collection.

Transport Instructions

Transport to the laboratory at room temperature.

Stability Requirements

Room Temperature

14 days

Refrigerated

30 days

Causes for Rejection
  • Hemolysis
Methodology
Polymerase Chain Reaction (Pcr) And Capillary Electrophoresis
Reference Intervals

See patient report.

Limitations

False positive or negative results may occur for reasons that include genetic variants, blood transfusions, bone marrow transplantation, or erroneous characterization of family relationships. Molecular-based testing is highly accurate, but as in any laboratory test, rare diagnostic errors may occur. Results are provided for identification of maternal cell contamination in the specimen itself, and not for diagnostic purposes.
