Clinical Utility

The t(8;14)(q32;q24) joins the cellular oncogenes C-MYC with sequences from immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) gene enhancers leading to deregulated expression of C-MYC protein. This abnormality is characteristic of Burkitt lymphoma and may be seen with other chromosomal abnormalities in cases of large B-cell lymphoma. FISH can detect this translocation in either interphase or metaphase cells. FISH can detect this rearrangement in either interphase or metaphase cells.

Causes for Rejection
  • Specimen frozen
  • Specimen arriving without any form of patient identification (unlabeled)
  • Specimen with attached needles
  • Specimen arriving with broken or leaking collection tube
  • Unfixed specimen treated with fixative
Methodology
FISH, Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization
Reference Intervals

In a normal cell, the expected signal pattern is two red signals and two green signals. In an abnormal cell containing a typical translocation, the expected signal pattern is one red signal, one green signal, and two fused signals.
