Specimen Type: Red Blood Cells

Collection Container: Green Top (Lithium or Sodium Heparin)

Desired Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Collection Instructions
  1. Collect specimen in a green top (lithium or sodium heparin) tube via venipuncture.
Processing and Submission Instructions
  1. Separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection.
  2. Remove and discard plasma, leaving the RBCs in the original collection container.
  3. Recap with the original stopper.
  4. Transport RBCs in original collection tube.
Transport Instructions

Transport to the laboratory refrigerated.

  • Received room temperature
  • Light green top tube (lithium heparin with gel)
  • Gray top tube (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate)
  • Tubes containing potassium based preservatives/anticoagulants
