Expected Turnaround Time
1 - 5 days
Clinical Utility
The combined aldosterone/renin tests are preferred when screening for hyperaldosteronism.
Specimen and Container Info

Specimen Type: Plasma

Collection Container: Lavender Top (EDTA)

Desired Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Collection Instructions
  1. Collect a lavender top (EDTA) tube from a supine or seated position via venipuncture.
  2. If the patient is seated, blood should be obtained in the morning without venous stasis (release tourniquet after venipuncture and wait at least 5 seconds before withdrawing blood).
  3. If the patient is supine, ensure that the patient is in this position for at least 30 minutes prior to collection.
Processing and Submission Instructions
  1. Separate serum from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection.
  2. Transfer 2 mL of serum to a clear aliquot tube (screw cap) and freeze immediately.
  3. Do not store refrigerated as this may cause falsely elevated results.
Patient Preparation

For supine position collections, patients must be in the position for at least 30 minutes prior to collection.

Transport Instructions

Transport to the laboratory frozen.

Stability Requirements

Room Temperature

8 hours

Frozen

28 days

Causes for Rejection
  • Grossly hemolyzed
  • Specimens stored on ice
Methodology
Quantitative Chemiluminescence Immunoassay
Reference Intervals

See patient report.

Limitations

Do not use this test for patients treated with cathepsin B. Menstruating females and those taking estrogen-containing medications may have lower renin direct concentrations, resulting in falsely high aldosterone-renin ratio (ARR). In these cases, order Aldosterone/Renin Activity Ratio.
