Clinical Utility

Used for rapid detection and differentiation of viruses and bacteria causing upper respiratory infection. Testing with this syndromic panel is recommended in patients where diagnosis of infection caused by agents other than influenzae A/B, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and/or SARS-CoV-2 may alter patient management. Alternative testing for Flu, RSV and SARS-CoV-2 only are available.

Specimen and Container Info

Specimen: Nasopharyngeal Swab

Collection Container: Universal Transport Media (UTM) or Viral Transport Media (VTM)

Desired Volume: 3 mL

Acceptable Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions
  1. Prior to collection, instruct the patient to blow their nose to remove excess mucous.
  2. Gently pass the swab through the nose into the posterior nasopharynx.
  3. Rub the swab on the nasopharyngeal membrane several times to loosen and collect cellular material.
  4. Withdraw the swab and place in UTM tube.
  5. Snap off swab at the score mark and screw on cap of UTM tube.
