Specimen Type: Red Blood Cells

Collection Container: Royal Blue Top (EDTA)

Desired Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Collection Instructions
  1. Collect a royal blue top (EDTA) tube via venipuncture.
Processing and Submission Instructions
  1. Separate plasma from cells within two hours of collection.
  2. Discard plasma and leave red blood cells in the original collection container.
  3. Transport 1 mL of red blood cells in the original container with the original royal blue cap.
  4. Submit only the RBCs to the laboratory.

Limitations

Specimens for elemental testing should be collected in certified metal-free containers. Elevated results for elemental testing may be caused by environmental contamination at the time of specimen collection and should be interpreted accordingly. It is recommended that unexpected elevated results be verified by testing another specimen in a trace metal free container.
