Test Code
VGPCR
Test Name
Vaginitis by PCR
CPT Codes
81514
Included Tests

The assay will detect and differentiate the following causes of vaginitis by PCR:

  • Candida group
  • Candida glabrata
  • Candida krusei
  • Trichomonas vaginalis
  • Bacterial Vaginosis (Dysbiosis markers include Lactobacillus spp., Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, Megasphaera-1)
Expected Turnaround Time
1 - 2 day
Clinical Utility

The Vaginitis Panel simultaneously detects and differentiates the three most common infectious causes of vaginitis— Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida species (with independent calls for Candida krusei and Candida glabrata) as well as markers for bacterial vaginitis utilizing a microbiome based algorithm. Individual bacterial vaginosis markers are not reported but rather reported as positive or negative for bacterial vaginosis. Markers of bacterial vaginosis include Lactobacillus spp. (L. crispatus and L. jensenii), Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, Megasphaera-1.

Specimen and Container Info

Specimen: Vaginal Swab

Container: BD Molecular Swab Collection Kit

Collection Instructions

Vaginal Swab Collection:

  1. Gently slide the swab no more than 2 inches into the vagina.
  2. Make sure the swab touches the sides of the vagina so that moisture is absorbed by the swab
  3. Rotate the swab for 10 - 15 seconds
  4. Withdraw the swab without touching the skin outside the vagina
  5. Swabs must be placed into the Molecular Swab Sample Buffer Tube directly. Uncap the Sample Buffer Tube and fully insert the swab into the tube so that the tip is at the bottom of the tube
  6. Grasping the swab by the cap, carefully break the swab shaft at the score mark. Use caution to avoid splashing or contamination of the tube contents
  7. Tighten the cap securely on the BD MAX UVE Sample Buffer Tube. In the event that the swab shaft is too long to allow closing the tube securely, collect a new specimen using a new swab
  8. Label the Sample Buffer Tube with patient information and date/time collected. Be careful not to obscure the barcodes on the tube.
Patient Preparation
  • Collect swab prior to pelvic, speculum, or bimanual exam.
  • No lubricant is used for the sample technique
Transport Instructions

Transport to the laboratory at room temperature.
